Global Warming: It's the Suns' Fault

For years now AGW proponents have argued two points: that their models are accurate (and becoming ever more so) and that the debate is settled, namely that all scientists agree that human activity is the cause of the "dramatic" increase in global temperature and CO2 in the atmosphere.

People like me, who question the accuracy of the findings (and are appalled by the politics surrounding the issue) are derided as anti-science, anti-reason boobs.

Now, out comes a research study from CERN, a study long-delayed due to political intereference, which turns the AGW positions on its head. It's findings, if true, completely invalidate the existing climate models. Second, and as important, it once again underscores the fact that AGW is not "settled" science.

The CERN press release states that "it is clear that the treatment of aerosol formation in climate models will need to be substantially revised." The press release concludes with the statement "However, it is premature to conclude that cosmic rays have a significant influence on climate until the additional nucleating vapours have been identified, their ion enhancement measured, and the ultimate effects on clouds have been confirmed."

The concluding statement is a necessary show of scientific humility, one not taken by the AGW zealots.

If you want to hear a presentation made by Jasper Kirkby at a TED conference, here it is:

EDIT: 9/14/2011

For further evidence that the science is not settled note that Nobel Prize Physicists are resigning from the American Physical Society over the position that the debate is settled.

Thank you for your letter inquiring about my membership. I did not renew it because I can not live with the statement below:

Emissions of greenhouse gases from human activities are changing the atmosphere in ways that affect the Earth's climate....

For further reading see the following from the American Physical Society:

There is a considerable presence within the scientific community of people who do not agree with the IPCC conclusion that anthropogenic CO2 emissions are very probably likely to be primarily responsible for the global warming that has occurred since the Industrial Revolution.

As for example the following quote from an APS article, Climate Sensitivity Reconsidered:
The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC, 2007) concluded that anthropogenic CO2 emissions probably caused more than half of the “global warming” of the past 50 years and would cause further rapid warming. However, global mean surface temperature has not risen since 1998 and may have fallen since late 2001. The present analysis suggests that the failure of the IPCC’s models to predict this and many other climatic phenomena arises from defects in its evaluation of the three factors whose product is climate sensitivity:

1.Radiative forcing ΔF;
2.The no-feedbacks climate sensitivity parameter κ; and
3.The feedback multiplier ƒ.

Some reasons why the IPCC’s estimates may be excessive and unsafe are explained. More importantly, the conclusion is that, perhaps, there is no “climate crisis”, and that currently-fashionable efforts by governments to reduce anthropogenic CO2 emissions are pointless, may be ill-conceived, and could even be harmful.

Turning Plastic Back to Oil

One of the key factors the left always forgets is technological change. This, if true, would be a game changer.

Typically made from petroleum, it is estimated that 7% of the world’s annual oil production is used to produce and manufacture plastic. That is more than the oil consumed by the entire African continent. ...

A Japanese company called Blest created a small, very safe and easy to use machine that can convert several types of plastic back into oil. ...

Blest’s conversion technology is very safe because it uses a temperature controlling electric heater rather than flame. The machines are able to process polyethylene, polystyrene and polypropylene (numbers 2-4) but not PET bottles (number 1). The result is a crude gas that can fuel things like generators or stoves and, when refined, can even be pumped into a car, a boat or motorbike. One kilogram of plastic produces almost one liter of oil. To convert that amount takes about 1 kilowatt of electricity, which is approximately ¥20 or 20 cents’ worth.

Science-Media Complex

I just googled Science-Media Complex, and in the back of my mind I was thinking "of course I'm the only one who ever thought of this phrase." Lo and behold, not only have other people come up with it but they also based it on the same idea: that Anthrogenic Global Warming is a hoax.

Global Warming, Scientific Hoaxes

Here's some more BS about Global Warming data which I wasn't aware before this article, World May Not Be Warming, Say Scientists :

The doubts of Christy [ professor of Atmospheric Science at the University of Alabama in Huntsville and a former lead author on the IPCC ] and a number of other researchers focus on the thousands of weather stations around the world, which have been used to collect temperature data over the past 150 years.

These stations, they believe, have been seriously compromised by factors such as urbanisation, changes in land use and, in many cases, being moved from site to site.

For instance:

Some [data collection stations] are next to air-conditioning units or are on waste treatment plants. One of the most infamous shows a weather station next to a waste incinerator. ...

[There are other examples such as a] weather station at Rome airport, which catches the hot exhaust fumes emitted by taxiing jets.

In Britain, a weather station at Manchester airport was built when the surrounding land was mainly fields but is now surrounded by heat-generating buildings.

If anthropogenic global warming was true there wouldn't be all this bullshit. The scientists who included this data, knowing it was compromised, make a mockery of themselves and taint the reputations of scientists everywhere.

One of the posters replying to the article wrote this hilarious spoof:
I have a theory. This could possibly happen sometime in the future. A large majority, sat 3/4's of all automobiles on earth, are pointed in the same direction, say east for example, when they simultaneously accelerate! This could cause the earth's rotation to increase suddenly and offset the natural timing of earths clocks causing chaos among the animal kingdom thereby turning night into day and summer into winter! This must not be allowed to happen! I will be accepting grants and donations and maybe even a Nobel Prize so I may quit my job and dedicate myself fulltime to do more research into this earth destroying disaster that may or may not be happen. No applause , please just cash or checks thank you.

Thank you Gregory Levitzki. That was an excellent comment.

How about this scenario? Some status hungry, multi-billionaire decides to build the biggest building in the world. In doing so he puts so much weight in one small area of the planet that he knocks the earth out of its orbit causing the Earth to plummet into the sun.

Pat Robertson and Danny Glover, Who is Crazier?

Pat Robertson blames the earthquake on the Haitians making a pact with the devil to get rid of the French (a surprising number of Haitians agree with this!?!) and Danny Glover blames it on George Bush.

I must say that these Pat Robertson pronouncements have become ordinary and have an internal logic. God sees all and knows all "not a single sparrow can fall to the ground" without God so knowing (Matthew 10:29). As an atheist I obviously disagree with God knowing anything and making a pact with the Devil and yet, as crazy as the previous two propositions are Danny Glover's rant is even crazier.

The earthquake in Haiti happened, according to Danny Glover,

because of global warming
because of climate change
climate summit in Copenhagen (lack of progress)

this is the response to
this is what happened
we have to act now

see 1:55

Obviously both are incorrect. All educated people know that this is all George W. Bush's fault.

The Copenhagen Accord

Witness the following that came from the Copenhagen seers:

"We agree that deep cuts in global emissions are required...with a view to reduce global emissions by 50 percent in 2050 below 1990 levels"

http://www.independent.co.uk/environment/climate-change/chinas-delaying-tactics-threaten-climate-deal-1844661.html

These peoples are liars and frauds; and the people who believe in this shit are too ignorant for words. The key point is below:

The draft retained plans to limit a rise in world temperatures to 2.0 Celsius over pre-industrial times but added a review in 2016 that would also consider a tougher limit of 1.5 Celsius.

This assumes that the global temperature has held steady UNTIL humans began industrial activity. It conveniently forgets that there have been numerous (24 over the last 2.5 million years) ice ages and in between each of thes periods of global cooling there have been periods of global warming. DUH!!!

Copenhagen, Chavez

Is the Global Warming Hoax Finally Over?

This stupidity, building for close to two decades, might now be about dead with the leaked emails.

five frontbenchers from Australia’s opposition Liberal party have resigned their portfolios rather than follow their leader Malcolm Turnbull in voting with Kevin Rudd’s Government on a new Emissions Trading Scheme. ...

The Knowledgeable Mr. Gore

What follows is an excerpt of the exchange between Tonight Show host Conan O’Brien and The Knowledgeable Al Gore:

“O'BRIEN: Now, what about ... you talk in the book about geothermal energy...

AL GORE, NOBEL LAUREATE: Yeah, yeah.

O'BRIEN: ...and that is, as I understand it, using the heat that's generated from the core of the earth ...

GORE: Yeah.

O'BRIEN: ...to create energy, and it sounds to me like an evil plan by Lex Luthor to defeat Superman. Can you, can you tell me, is this a viable solution, geothermal energy?

GORE: It definitely is, and it's a relatively new one. People think about geothermal energy - when they think about it at all - in terms of the hot water bubbling up in some places, but two kilometers or so down in most places there are these incredibly hot rocks, 'cause the interior of the earth is extremely hot, several million degrees, and the crust of the earth is hot …”

And people think that Palin and Bush are dumb?

Climate Change and Ignorance

As much as I respect science too often it is the science media that makes scientists look like idiots and scientific research silly. Look at the following from sciencedaily.com.

The third sentence of the article states: ”To contain global warming, and its risks and consequences, warming compared to pre-industrial times (pre 1900) should not exceed two degrees Celsius.”

For this sentence to make any sense whatsoever three unstated assumptions would have to be true. First the temperature of the globe was constant until the industrial revolution; second the industrial revolution started in 1900; and third that there are no other factors to be considered.

All three assumptions are false.

The full quote from the article is below:
If CO2 emissions are halved by 2050 compared to 1990, global warming can be stabilised below two degrees. This is shown by two studies by a co-operation of German, Swiss and British researchers in the journal Nature.

To contain global warming, and its risks and consequences, warming compared to pre-industrial times (pre 1900) should not exceed two degrees Celsius. Although, according to the reports of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), there is no specific temperature threshold for dangerous climate changes, and the negative effects are gradually increasing, over one hundred countries have adopted this “2°C target”. Scientists have used a new probability model to calculate how much CO2 our atmosphere tolerates under these target specifications. This and another study2, recently published in Nature, produced similar results: From 2000 to 2050, a maximum of 1000 billion tonnes of CO2 may be emitted into the atmosphere. Roughly speaking, today, around one third of this wad has already been shot.

Climate Change: Halving Carbon Dioxide Emissions By 2050 Could Stabilize Global Warming

Hmmm. I guess these researchers, writers, and editors convenietly forgot that the earth has been around for a while and that life -- including mammalian life and primate life -- has thrived with CO2 levels far higher than what exists today.

Global Warming

I’ve been meaning to look at some of the journal articles regarding global warning and see how global warming advocates had been playing with the data. Thankfully others are looking into this as well. Michael Fumento, in his article When ‘Science’ Plays Politics brings up an article from Science, which in response to the Hurricane Katrina declared: “A large increase was seen in the number and proportion of hurricanes reaching categories 4 and 5.” But, as Michael Fumento points out, “the researchers simply cut off their data at 1970, though public statistics go back to 1850. Using the full data set would have reversed the conclusion.”

The funny thing is – I do think that global warming is a concern, even though humanity has little or nothing to do with it. Major climatic change needs to be understood and dealt with; as do changes in the earth’s magnetic field (due soon) and major asteroid impacts. What we don’t need are advocates of a certain political viewpoint using science to promote their agenda. This is as disgusting and as venal as religious leaders preventing scientific progress because it interferes with dogma.
